Libertarianism is a political philosophy which, in short, strongly favors the concept of individualism. Generally, libertarians feel that the government should be as small as possible, where both social and economic issues are concerned, and are therefore generally thought of as fiscal conservatives and social liberals. In modern society, libertarians most often register the Republican Party, given that economics generally take precedence over social debates and that the Republican Party is more fiscally conservative than the Democratic. However, libertarians have, in fact, formed their own party, known as the Libertarian Party. Libertarianism, in America, is most opposed by populism and authoritarianism, which favor much larger government.
